History by Joyce Costin, as of February 2006
The concept for a Fayetteville Republican Women's Club originated in the late 1960s. A group of dedicated women, including Pinky Jackson and Marianne Cashion, began gathering due to their deep concern for the state of North Carolina's government. At that time, North Carolina lacked a legitimate governing structure!
The state was governed by a political "machine" that tirelessly worked to maintain its grip on power. These women found hope in Congressman Jim Gardner, rallying around conservative James Gardner and supporting his campaign for Governor. Unfortunately, a victory for Jim Gardner did not materialize.
Instead, another Jim emerged from the hills of North Carolina and captured everyone's attention. Governor Jim Holshouser was elected in 1972, marking the first Republican Governor elected in this century!
Amidst these turbulent times, driven by hope and concern for the future, the Fayetteville Republican Women's Club was established. The women continued to meet, and our current club was officially chartered on February 15, 1972.
The Fayetteville Republican Women's Club has faced numerous challenges. We operated for 22 years in a county that had not seen a Republican elected in a century. However, in 1994, one of our Club members, Mia Morris, made history by becoming the first Republican elected to the N.C. House of Representatives in this century.
Today, we proudly acknowledge that our ranks have included a City Council member and Mayor Pro Tem, a School Board member, a Board of Election member, a County Commissioner, as well as a Vice Chairman, secretary, and treasurer of the County NCGOP, along with NCFRW Officers. As we transition into the new millennium, we carry forward 33 years of a proud, effective, and influential history. We eagerly anticipate the future with enthusiasm and excitement, knowing that we have made a significant difference.

Laura Mussler serves as the President, with Carol Ulrich holding the position of Vice President. Heather Holmes (not pictured) takes on the role of Treasurer. Janine Seals is the Assistant Treasurer, and Barbara Porter fulfills the duties of Secretary.
The mission of the Fayetteville Republican Women’s Club is to empower and promote the residents of Fayetteville and its surrounding areas to foster a strong and effective outreach for the Republican Party. This involves advocating for the party’s philosophy and supporting candidates who embody the core values of the Republican Party, as stated by FRWC President McGinnis in 2008.

The NCFRW currently consists of around 2,200 members across more than 50 unit clubs within the state. This state federation, which has been affiliated with the NFRW since 1953, plays an active role in both North Carolina and national politics. The bylaws of the NCFRW provide the framework for its operations and align with the bylaws of each unit club. Members represent a diverse array of backgrounds, including homemakers, career women, single women, seniors, and women from various communities. These dedicated women contribute in numerous ways throughout the unit clubs and the state federation, making them an essential part of the Republican Party.
The NFRW is one of the largest women's political organizations in the country, boasting nearly 100,000 members across over 1,900 clubs in all 50 states, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, Guam, and the Virgin Islands. This organization holds a distinct advantage over other women's political groups due to its diverse membership, which includes a unique mix of both mature and young members. Additionally, the NFRW benefits from strong financial backing and, unlike many other political organizations, it has a formal affiliation with the Republican Party. The president of the NFRW also serves ex-officio on the RNC Executive Committee.
While the federation operates independently of the Republican National Committee and lacks any legal connections to the Republican Party, both organizations—the NFRW and RNC—share a common purpose: to support and demonstrate loyalty to the Republican Party, its philosophy and ideals, and to aid in the election of Republican candidates. The NCFRW and NFRW serve as the dedicated volunteer force committed to this mission at the county, state, and national levels, starting with the unit club.
